Workshop Overview

Typography, Stop Motion & Democratic Education: Making Identity Visible – Shaping Diversity Together

In this 2.5-day workshop, participants creatively explore the question “Identity – Who Do We Become?”. They develop their own shapes, letters and stamps, combining them into individual words, concepts and symbols. These become personal forms of expression connected to identity, cultural background, language, belonging or lived experience.

The workshop combines cultural and civic education with creative media practice. Participants discover that democracy is shaped not only by rules and elections, but also by people sharing their perspectives, listening to others, accepting differences and working together to make decisions and shape how we live together.

Part I – My Perspective

The workshop begins with a selection of short stop-motion animations. These films spark a conversation about how different people express their identities and whose perspectives are represented in the media.

Participants then develop their own typographic elements. They create words and symbols that hold personal meaning and experiment with different printing and design techniques. Each person decides which experiences, thoughts and perspectives they wish to share.

Part II – Moving Together

Step by step, participants learn the basics of stop-motion animation and create their first animations using their stamps.

The focus goes beyond technical skills: participants collaborate, exchange ideas and experience how individual contributions can come together to form a shared creation. They learn to express their own ideas while taking those of others into account.

Part III – Many Voices, One Shared Work

The individual contributions come together in a collaborative animation project. Different words, symbols and perspectives are connected, making diversity visible.

Creating this shared work becomes a democratic process in itself: participants make decisions together, negotiate different ideas and find compromises. They discover that creating something together does not mean everyone has to be the same. Instead, different voices can each have their place and contribute equally to the community.
