"Animation for Every Perspective" – Building Bridges Through 3D Storytelling and Giving Every Voice a Place

5.-6.& 17.October 2026 | 14:30-20:30

Workshop Leader: Stefan Nacke

Location:  Migranetz Thüringen e.V. Konferenzräume, Schillerstraße 10, 99423 Weimar

Workshop Overview

The workshop deliberately uses 3D animation as a low-threshold, low-barrier means of expression: unlike conventional camera or acting work, animation requires neither linguistic confidence nor a willingness to appear on camera. This gives an equal voice to young people who would otherwise not actively participate in discourse-based formats for linguistic, cultural or personal reasons.

Working with fictional characters creates a protected space in which personal experiences — of exclusion, cultural belonging or solidarity, for example — can be told indirectly, without participants having to expose themselves directly. This encourages openness and honest exchange about topics that are often harder to approach in direct conversation.

Because all participants start from zero regardless of prior experience, the technique acts as a social equaliser within the group: differences in status, whether based on language skills or self-confidence, recede in favour of creativity and collaboration.

The collective final work, assembled from individual animated short films, makes cultural and personal diversity structurally tangible: many different perspectives come together to form a shared group product — a hands-on experience of democratic participation and mutual recognition.

Target audience: Beginners and interested participants with no prior knowledge. Participants must bring their own laptop. Alternatively, a tablet with a mouse and keyboard may be used, provided that Blender runs on the device. Laptops will not be provided.

Participants: Maximum of 8 participants.

Preparation

To ensure that we do not have to start from zero during the workshop and can begin with a solid foundation, all participants are asked to download the free 3D software Blender in advance, watch the beginner tutorial linked below, and follow the demonstrated steps themselves.

At the beginning of the workshop, participants can bring along or present a first small model they have created themselves and briefly share any challenges they encountered. This way, everyone will already have gained some basic experience with the software, allowing us to focus directly on the more essential aspects of the workshop.

If you have any questions or encounter any problems during the preparation, feel free to contact the workshop leader directly at nacke@videoheadz.de.
